The Transgender Youth Project represents families and students in a wide range of school-related matters.
We are working with schools across the country to ensure transgender students have the tools they need to be successful in school and beyond, including environments where they are respected, classes free from bullying and harassment by peers and staff, and access to appropriate facilities.
In 2011, NCLR filed the first complaint with the United States Department of Education and Department of Justice on behalf of a transgender student who was denied access to the facilities that matched his gender identity. That complaint against the Arcadia Unified School District resulted in an historic resolution agreement and nondiscrimination policy that affirmed the right of transgender students to be treated consistent with their gender identity in schools.
Since then, NCLR has worked with many families in a number of school districts throughout the country to assist the school district in supporting their child. Drawing from that experience, NCLR was a lead co-author of Schools in Transition: A Guide for Supporting Transgender Students in K-12 Schools, a resource for families and educators.
NCLR also plays a critical, behind-the-scenes role in litigation and legislative advocacy on behalf of transgender youth in schools. NCLR has filed several amicus briefs in support of transgender students seeking to establish their right to be who they are while at school. At the same time, NCLR is an active participant in a number of coalitions to prevent state legislatures from enacting laws that harm transgender youth, like “bathroom bills.”
