An Open Letter to Transgender Youth & Their Families

We Got You

November 11, 2016

To Transgender Youth and Families:

We are here for you. We know and understand the concern and sense of uncertainty many people are feeling in the wake of Tuesday’s election. We share it, too. But we are committed to protecting you. We have experience and resources to share and will do everything we can to prevent a new administration from reversing protections that have been so hard fought for so long. You are not alone.

We are also here to remind you that even though we are in a very different political world, bedrock nondiscrimination laws will remain and the federal and state courts remain open to all of us. We will ensure the robust enforcement of those laws and will stand to protect the community when those laws are broken.

And do not forget this. We have secured many gains for the community over the last decade and a half at the state and local level as well. This election does not change that. Thousands and thousands of students and young people now live in areas where there are express protections in state and local laws. Thousands of educators across the country stand with us in our commitment to protect all youth – including transgender, gender nonconforming, genderqueer, non-binary youth, and beyond. We will continue to fight for more expansive protections at the state and local level regardless of what change we see federally.

Leading child welfare, medical, mental health, and educational organizations stand with us and will continue to do so. Many of them have already reached out to see how they can help more.

Governments can help or hinder, but change continues to happen over time as people tell the stories of their lives and stand up with, and for, one another. We are unwavering in our work to create environments in which every child knows they are safe, respected, and free to be themselves.

If you are facing challenges in your school or community, reach out to us or to other LGBT legal or support organizations.
