Support the Equality Act

Support Equality Act Landing Page
As we have seen, legalized discrimination can lead to hate and violence.

And we need your help to stop it!

Palm Springs became the first city in the country to pass a resolution pressing Congress to support the federal Equality Act following the June 12th shooting at an Orlando LGBTQ nightclub that left 49 people dead and more than 50 others seriously injured. The California State Legislature followed soon after with a similar resolution.

This important bill would amend federal civil rights laws to reflect that sex discrimination laws bar anti-LGBTQ discrimination, as many courts have held, and create nationwide protections against sex discrimination in public accommodations. By supporting the Equality Act, we can ensure our community is protected from discrimination under the law and help create an environment where all are treated with dignity and respect for who they are.

We urge each of you to participate in our #SupportEqualityAct campaign NOW. This campaign recognizes that no matter where you live, you can press your local and state elected leaders to stand on the right side of history by emailing them directly and sending sample language to pass similar resolutions.

It’s easy—and fast—to take part. Here’s what you can do:

  • STEP 1Search for your elected leaders’ email addresses.
  • STEP 2Email a letter and sample resolution to your elected leaders asking them to join the effort.
  • STEP 3Share our social networking posts and tweets.

STEP 1: Search for Your Elected Leaders’ Email

GOVERNOR—Use this search function to find your governor’s email address or message page.

STATE LAWMAKERS—Use this search function to find your state lawmakers’ email addresses or message pages.

CITY LEADER—Use this search function to find your mayor’s email address. If your city is not in listed, search your city government’s website for the “mayor’s office” or “city council” page, where you should find a link to your mayor’s bio and contact page.

COUNTY LEADER: If you reside in an unincorporated area of your county, search your county government’s website for the page describing the county’s governing board or council, where you should find a link to the chairperson’s bio and contact page.

STEP 2: Email Letter & Resolution Language to Your Elected Leader

Cut and paste the below letter into an email or message page for your elected leader.

Dear <Add Name of Elected Leader>,

In the wake of the June 12, 2016 shooting at an Orlando LGBTQ nightclub that left 49 people dead and more than 50 others injured, I am hoping you will take the courageous step of protecting the LGBTQ community by encouraging Congress to pass the Equality Act.

As we have seen, legalized discrimination against marginalized communities can lead to mistreatment and violence. By supporting the Equality Act, we can ensure our LGBT family, friends, and neighbors are protected from discrimination under the law and help create a respectful environment where all are treated with dignity for who they are.

I am a citizen of <fill in city name and state> and I am hopeful that  you will follow the lead of Palm Springs, CA elected officials by passing a resolution in support of the Equality Act, which would amend the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include “sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity” among the categories of prohibited discrimination.

I am including a link——for you to download sample resolution language. Thank you for your leadership and consideration. I deeply hope my <fill in either city, county, or state> will be on the right side of history.
